After completing a Bachelors degree in Mathematics at Brigham Young University, I completed my Phd in Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics at the University of Michigan in 2012. While in Ann Arbor, I worked under the tutelage of Charlie Doering (Mathematics, Physics, and Complex Systems) and Ricky Rood (Atmospheric Science) and spent as much time outside of the Mathematics department as in it. Following graduate school I completed a postdoc at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory, working primarily with the Ocean Modeling group there. Since that time I have tried to maintain a balance between novel mathematics and the applications that drive that mathematics. I am primarily motivated by applications in the physical sciences that tie into partial differential equations (PDE) and the use of data and modern observations.

I am always looking to recruit more students (undergraduate and graduate). My current primary research interests can be divided into 3 main themes. :

  1. Recreation of historical earthquakes in Indonesia using Bayesian statistical techniques.
  2. Parameter learning for dissipative dynamical systems, specifically those motivated by fluid mechanics.
  3. The impact of stochastic forcing on the evolution and dynamics of fluid systems.

In the past I have worked on other related topics (and still think about these occasionally) including:

  1. Rigorous upper bound theory or providing rigorous upper bounds via variational methods, for the heat transport in turbulent convection.
  2. Numerical analysis and verification of climate models.
  3. Asymptotically reduced models for geophysical systems with multiple scales.

Personal perspective:
Outside of work, I am married to Samantha who is completing her Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner degree at the University of Utah, and we have 5 kids ranging from 6 to 14 years old.

I thoroughly enjoy being outdoors, rock climbing, trail running, hiking, and volunteering with Utah County Search and Rescue. I am also a committed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-saints which is the sponsoring institution of BYU.
